Vector Art Banana

This was just the banana in vector format that I just made in free time. I used opacity techniques, which I drew path objects to multiply over and over on the same place to make shade until it looks similar the real banana. It was not difficult, but you must attempt. An  another technique to draw the banana is using Mesh Tool, which it's more difficult.

These are my steps that I captured. I would be happy to explain you how to do this too. But before start this tutorial, you must know that I made this tutorial when I didn't know that the eye drop tool in llustrator can also pick color from the image. So what I suggest to you that you just paste the banana image in one layer in Illustrator, and forget all steps that picking the color from the banana that opening in Photoshop. For the banana that you pasted in Illustrator, it's not necessary to reduce its opacity , just leave and lock it, in order to pick color from that image with the eye drop tool.

STEP 1
Open Illustrator, then create new document. Just pick up some banana image from Google, then place it as Layer 1 to be original background.

STEP 2
Before you start doing anything, I think it would be accommodate for you, if you reduce opacity of the banana to 50%. If you remain it 100% intensity, it will make you confuse when you draw an object over it. After you finish, please lock it by click the blank frame that beside the eye icon, until it shows the locking key icon. Everything you create from now on will be made over this layer. so you won't do anything with this background.

STEP 3
Create Layer 2, you will start to draw something on this layer.

STEP 4
Open your banana in Photoshop. You need to pick its color to use in Illustrator.
1. Use Eyedropper Tool or press "I". Then left click on the position that I showed you on banana, it's body dolor in yellow.
2. Go to double click at Foreground color which is the small square at the bottom of your toolbox
3. Copy color code as my example. You need to use this code for the yellow color in Illustrator.

STEP 5
You have your color code now in computer memory. Just go back to Illustrator
1. Double click fill color box (The same place as in Photoshop's foreground box).
2. Paste your code that you have copied before into the box as marked in picture below. Then press OK.

STEP 6
With the color code you have just pasted. Create new swatch color in Swatch palette. You won't lose this yellow later.

STEP 7
Use Pen Tool from toolbox then start to draw along with the outer edge of the banana shape. I think using Pen Tool in illustrator is easy. Before you start drawing, It will accommodate for you to switch from fill color mode to stoke color by clicking switch icon between foreground and background color.

STEP 8
Draw the line until it close end to beginning point.

STEP 9
Go back to Photoshop, then do the same step as you have done before. Use eyedropper to pick color from the other place that in different shade as my example, copy the code.

STEP 10
Paste color you have copied into Color picker then press OK.

STEP 11
Now we are going to make detail of shade like in original one. Press "N" to activate Pencil Tool or click by yourself from Toolbox. This is my technique about painting in Illustrator, go to set my value at Transparency Palette. I set Multiply and reduce opacity.

STEP 12
Press enter, it will call Pencil Tool Option. Adjust it the same as mine.

STEP 13
Let's be an artist. Use Pencil Tool draw shade until your banana looks similar to original.

STEP 14
You see that? Just making shade over and over on the same area until banana looks dimensionally. It becomes like this because the effect "Multiply". It will make that area looks darker and darker if you draw again and again over on the same location. This effect can work well for making shade and shadow.

STEP 15
Sometimes you need to adjust different value for opacity at Transparency palette, to make different mood of shade.

STEP 16
Do like same thing before. Now I want to make light shade. I need to get back to Photoshop to pick this color.

STEP 17
From the color you have picked before from Photoshop. Now it's time to make lighter shade, by painting the other side the body. Try to make it looks most similar

STEP 18
Copy the peel texture and repeat pasting it until it entirely cover the area.

STEP 20
To make your banana looks more interesting, just creating background in earth tone behind.

STEP 21
To make it looks more real, you need to put the radial shadow, by using Ellipse Tool from Toolbox, then draw a circle. At Gradient palette, set color like mine. You will have gradient circle like in the picture.

STEP 22
Use Multiply at Transparency palette, then reduce its opacity. Too black can look fake.

STEP 23
Resize vertically the gradient shape and compose it under the banana.

END
Put some text to make it looks interesting. Congratulation!! you have banana created by your own
